Drive on the right: Traffic in Rwanda travels on the right-hand side of the road. If you are planning a self-drive trip, remembering this rule is essential, particularly if you come from a country where vehicles drive on the opposite side.

Carry a valid driving licence: Anyone driving in Rwanda should have a valid driving licence. International visitors may use a valid International Driving Permit (IDP), subject to the applicable requirements and the duration of their stay.

Never drink and drive: Driving under the influence of alcohol is prohibited in Rwanda and can result in penalties. The legal blood alcohol limit is 0.08 percent, and police may conduct roadside breath tests. Always arrange alternative transportation if you have been drinking.

Observe speed limits: The speed limit in urban areas and towns is generally 40 km/h, while roads outside these areas may allow speeds of up to 60 km/h. Always watch for posted signs and adjust your speed according to road and traffic conditions.
